Pastor's Note - January 24, 2010
WEEKDAY MASSES
Not all denominations have the tradition of weekday services, but in the Catholic Church it has long been a staple that people join in daily Mass. Those who attend daily or at least once during the week, usually find something special happens.
First of all, the flavor of a weekday Mass is different. We use the small chapel and ten to twenty-five persons attend. The Mass itself is simpler with only one reading besides the Gospel and no recitation of the Creed. The setting is relaxed and the pace is gentle.
Most people who attend regularly like the way this thirty-minute time of prayer sets a flavor for the entire day. It becomes part of their personal spirituality. Most of the time the general intercessions (petitions) are open to all, so people can bring special prayer requests. The weekday cycle of readings covers parts of the Bible that don’t get read on Sundays. (If you attend daily Mass each day for the two-year cycle of readings, you will have covered most of the Bible.)
Finally, those who attend regularly get to know each other. They share each other’s ups and downs. On Tuesdays, we have coffee afterwards; some stay for the weekly Bible study while others have to leave for work or other commitments.
If you can come to any of our weekday Masses, you will be enriching your own spirituality and helping yourself on your faith journey.
