SPRING AWAKENING
March 30th, 2008

Last Sunday, I was invited to an Easter dinner at my nephew’s house late in the afternoon. So when I got back home after Sunday Masses, I sat down to read and quickly fell asleep. (I wonder why.) It was a very deep sleep.
Some time later, I found myself trying to wake up, but just not able. The profound sleep I was in just didn’t want to let go of its hold on me. It was like trying to come up for air when under water. Eventually, I opened my eyes and jumped up, looking at the clock. Fortunately, I still had enough time to get to dinner.
This time of year, always reminds me of that type of waking up. Spring wants to come but winter is unwilling to give in gracefully. So there is a struggle. We have cold and snow when we are expecting sun and warmth. But spring awakening will come. That is for sure.
On this second Sunday of Easter, it is tempting to ‘move on to other things’ now that the Easter celebrations are passed. Like spring overcoming winter, however, the true power of Easter re-birth is still making its way into our lives. We are still coming out of darkness into light, out of sleep into being fully awake.
During the next few weeks, please take the time to let the wonder of Easter wash over you. And as spring starts to make its claim outside, allow a new vitality of faith stir within.
Happy Easter Season!
