SNOW DAYS
March 4th, 2007

As school kids and teachers were wondering last week about possible snow days and the closing of school, I started reminiscing about my own grade school days. We had plenty of snow days, and I don’t think we were limited to only five per school year.
Here’s the strange thing, however. I can’t for the life of me, recall anything that I ever did on one of those free days because of too much snow. I suspect I played outside in the snow. Maybe I and my siblings played board games at the kitchen table. But I simply don’t remember.
Perhaps that is what is so great about snow days. They are not the days for doing special things. Instead, they can be days of slowing down, reading a good book, or just enjoying ourselves.
Of course, snow days can be a burden on parents. Not only do the adults going off to work have to contend with vicious weather, but many times they also have to make sure there is someone to watch their kids. Snow days can be a real challenge.
Despite all that, sometimes nature simply wants us to stop and take a little break. We need that, too.
