HOW PEOPLE ENJOY SPRING
April 29th, 2007

Last Sunday was an exceptionally beautiful spring day. Perhaps because we have had snow and cold earlier this month, it seemed like everyone tried to take advantage of the sun and warmth. Here is what I observed on Sunday.
Kids and adults were on their bikes, some of which were Harley’s. People, who could, drove with the tops down on their cars. I saw hikers, in-line skaters, and lots of young couples pushing babies in strollers.
A few people were doing yard work; I found myself feeling sorry for them. There were lots of cook-outs. People were grilling in the back yard and using picnic areas at parks. A few people were sitting on park benches or under trees reading books.
At one of the metro parks, I saw families fishing while little kids were in the play-ground checking out all the apparatus. Some grandparents sat on a bench watching the little kids while older kids played at the edge of the creek.
And when I stopped at the Sweet Retreat in Waterville, I discovered others who had the same idea. A team of young baseball players, still wearing their uniforms, had just come in from a game.
In short, people were trying to enjoy the sun and fresh air. At the same time, there seemed to be an emphasis on spending time with other people. Family life was strongly in evidence.
Thank God for such days. We need them to enrich our lives. And thanks to all who also recognized the importance of celebrating Eucharist as a family first before going out to sample God’s gifts of nature.
