HOW BIG IS HUGE?
September 9th, 2007

As I was driving down the road, I saw a sign that announced a “Huge Garage Sale” and then gave an address. Since I was going that way anyway, I kept an eye open. What I saw was some clothes racks, a few tables, and some furniture spread out on the driveway in front of the garage.
Perhaps there was more at this sale than what I saw, but I started to wonder how large a sale has to be to be acclaimed ‘huge.’ For me, huge is still very, very large.
Advertisers, and most of the rest of us, tend to over-state something in order to get people’s attention. Sadly, that is when things don’t live up to expectations. We tune out or get cynical about it.
On the other hand, some things are subjective. To say that someone’s love has made a huge difference in your life may be true. Only that person can really judge – although others may see some differences. To note that one’s faith is hugely important may be a sincere statement. But the reality of that hugeness comes about in a change in the way a person lives.
In other words, just saying something is great or huge is not enough. It has to live up to the power of those words.
A man told me the other day that church is ‘a huge part of his family’s life.’ I believe him; it shows!
