A TASTE OF HARVEST
October 14th, 2007

One of my favorite things at this time of year is going to an apple farm. There I like to try different varieties of apples, often those that are a bit tart, juicy, and make noise when you chomp into them. (I try to avoid soft apples or those that are too sweet.)
Recently, I bit into an apple and the taste buds in my mouth exploded. The juice ran down from my mouth. Whatever I had eaten earlier that day was totally and completely forgotten. Biting into that apple right at the farm made it even fresher and tastier! It was the taste of harvest.
Without a doubt, this is the prime harvest season. Since the weather allowed many gardens to flourish even longer this year, we have been able to reap many of the fruits of our crops. Actually tasting the produce and enjoying these delectable fruits and vegetables is a reminder of how God provides for us.
Over the years, especially in cities where supermarkets are people’s only access to produce, we have started to disconnect what we eat from its source. Don’t get me wrong, I love the fact that there is so much available to the consumer. But buying it in a store at any time of the year, we start to forget how these plants are grown. And, frankly, we miss some of the wonderful quality and taste.
As I bite into an apple – usually one or two a day – I try to say a prayer of thanks to God for the many fruits of the earth. Try it.
