A Sense of Humor

The sign in someone’s yard read, “WORMS FOR SALE FOR FISHING OR EATING.” I laughed as I drove by. But I also wondered how others would react to the sign.

If you were to ask people if they have a sense of humor, most would say they do. In reality, however, a great number of people take things way too seriously. They often have trouble understanding when something is to be taken lightly or in jest.

A good sense of humor never makes fun of others or puts people down. In fact, the best humor comes from laughing at ourselves or the human
situation. I think it was Chesterton who said that a sense of humor is a sense of perspective. Those with humor know what is important and what isn’t. They
can keep little things little while giving major attention to what deserves attention.

With a sense of humor we all would start to laugh more. We can enjoy the every-day activities we do a bit more. And we find ourselves enjoying others
more, too.

To develop a sense of humor, we have to become more observant of human behavior, but without being overly judgmental or accusing. It also is good when we can give equal time to laughing at ourselves for the silly things we do.
