A MATTER OF TASTE
September 16th, 2007

The other day, I was comparing with someone the foods that we liked or didn’t like as children. To my amazement I realized that many foods that I avoided or only ate when forced (by mom) are now among my favorites. In fact, there are very few things that I don’t like to eat.
What has changed or, better, what has caused me to change my tastes? I’m sure that growing up and maturing has made a difference. But probably more importantly, through the years I have eaten many people’s cooking in many settings. Thus my tastes have broadened and my acceptability of different tastes has grown.
There is a saying among some African tribes that those who think their mother’s cooking is the best are those who have not traveled. What that means is that, not only do we encounter other qualities of food elsewhere, but our own tastes expand. And we learn that our narrow range of judging is simply that, namely, too narrow.
Although all tastes are personal, whether of food or any of the arts, one can improve tastes and even encounter alternative favorites by being open to something new. Also necessary is a mindset that makes room for other possibilities.
People are sometimes quick to say they like or don’t like something. That may be true, but it may also be saying more about them than about the object of their like/dislike. When it comes to the ways of the Lord, it’s always worthwhile first to ‘taste and see.’
