MEMORIES

In the old days, it was common to plant a tree when someone moved into a new house. Traditionally, these trees have been fruit trees. Following the custom but with a slight variation, I planted a lilac when I moved into my house last year. This past week it had its first blooms.
Lilacs are special because they usually bloom for Mother’s Day…and almost everyone’s mother seems to love lilacs. I know my mother did.
But there is something else about lilacs. Besides their wonderful shades of violet, they also provide a fragrance that is powerful in inducing memories. Take a whiff and you will be transported back to some experience during school days or young adult years. Almost as if there is direct wiring between the sense of smell and the memory cells of the brain, one leads to the other.
Today, in addition to praying for and supporting all current mothers, I want to ask you to remember deceased mothers and grandmothers, those whose work of sharing life with you can still be felt.
And if it helps recall their compassion, concern, and unconditional love, stop and smell a lilac. Let it make the connections for you.
